despite可作介词、名词和动词使用。我们通常需要掌握的是作介词的用法。
1、用作介词
A.despite表示“即使；尽管；不管；虽然(是介词,后跟名词或代词,构成介词短语)”的意思。与 in spite of同义。放在句首时，要接成分，成分也就是句子的组成部分，由词或词组充当。如：
Despite his advanced years，he is learning to drive．
虽然年事已高，他现在在学驾驶汽车。
Despite the drought，we expect a good crop．
尽管天旱，丰收依然在望。
We started for the tour in despite of the heavy rain.
尽管下大雨, 我们还是出发去旅行.
We shall be victorious in despite of difficulties.
不管有什么困难,我们一定会胜利.
despite all that尽管如此 (作状语,要用逗号与句子的主干隔开)
Despite all that, tourism is still making modest progress.

B.despite表示“不由自主；情不自禁”的意思。如:
Despite myself, Jim's remarks had caused me to stop and reflect.
吉姆的话让我不由自主地停下来细想。
Hearing the good news, the kids smiled despite of themselves.
听到了这个好消息，孩子们不由自主的笑了。
2、用作名词
despite用作名词时有“轻视，鄙视；憎恨”的意思，在诗/文中有“侮辱，伤害”的意思。如：
She wanted neither favor nor despite.
她宠辱不惊。
The despite in which outsiders were held is legendary.
外界持有的轻视是子虚乌有。
3、用作动词
despite在古代英语中还用作动词，表达“蔑视，轻蔑”的意思，也有用作“故意使烦恼，故意伤害”的意思。
在现代英语中，despite一般用作介词和名词使用，第三用种法可以忽视。
