it作为人称代词，主要用于指提到过的或正在谈论的事物或动物；指已知或正在发生的事实或情况。例如：
He aimed at the bird and missed it.
他瞄准那只鸟去没打中。（动物，指前面到过的鸟）
I dropped my watch and it broke.
.我把手表掉在地上摔坏了。（事物，指前面提到过的手表）
It was 4 o'clock and the mail still hadn't come.
已经4点了，邮件还没来。（事物，指时间）
When the factory closes ,it will mean 600 people losing their jobs.
工厂关闭后，将意味着600人失业。（指事实，工厂关闭）
除此之外，it有时也可用于指人，主要有以下用法：
1、用于指代性别不明的婴儿。如：
Her new baby is tiny. It only weights 2 kilos.
她刚生出的孩子特别小，只有两公斤重。
He threw the baby high in the air and it stopped crying.
他把孩子向空中高高抛起，孩子就停止了哭闹。
2、用于指明或确认某人的身份。如：
“Listen. Someone is crying.”“Oh, it must be Mary.”
“听，有人在哭。”“噢，一定是玛丽。”
There is someone knocking at the door.It must be the computer repairman.
有人在敲门.一定是电脑维修工.
Someone must have been here. But we have no idea who it was.
一定有人来过，但我们不知道是谁。
对于身份不明的人，我们要确定其身份，可以用it；但是，如果是指代身份明确的人，则不能用it，而要根据情况用he或she。比较：
A tall man stood up and shook hands with her. It was the general manager.
一个高个子站起来同她握了手，他是总经理。
The general manager just called. He told us to wait for him at the gate.
总经理刚来过电话，他叫我们在门口等他。
3. 在答语中，it常用来指本人，如：
It’s me. / It’s Peter.
用于敲门。屋里人问：who is it? 你的回答就是：“it's me.” 是我。
用于打电话。电话里问：Who is this? 你的回答就是：“it's Peter.” 是皮特。
Mom, it's me, can't you see?
妈妈，那是我，你看不出来吗？
